There are intelligent atheists out here but why are so ?

I don't think St. Augustine invented the trinity. The concept was being kicked around before that, and Athanasius developed the doctrine of the divinity of the Holy Spirit. The doctrine reached its modern form in the late 4th century. Augustine further developed the concept but didn't invent it, and didn't write De Trinitate until after the doctrine had been settled by the Church.
