How to become a cop with military dishonorable discharge?

I was wondering how I can go about becoming a New Jersey State Trooper if I have an other-than honorable (OTH) discharge? The trooper I spoke to on the phone said it might as well be a dishonorable discharge so far as they're concerned. Are there any police departments that will take me? It has been 2 years since my discharge, and I haven't really been in too much trouble (past misdemeanors) since then.
