What was going on the world when beethoven was alive?
The most important thing occurring in the world during Beethoven's life time was the Napoleonic Wars which raged across Europe whilst he was a young man. remember that he first dedicated his Eroica symphony to Napoleon until he, Boney, crowned himself Emperor. At this, it is said, Beethoven tore out the dedication page, rededicating the symphony 'to the memory of a great man'. At one time he was reputedly the composer of the 'Jena' symphony commemorating the battle of that name, but his authorship has now been disproved. Beethoven lived in Vienna during the years 1814/1815 at the time of the great Congress of Vienna, organised by Prince Metternich of Austria to decide on the shape of Europe, post Napoleon. This was attended by all the crowned heads of Europe and many of their nobility plus many leading politicians, such as the UK's Castlereagh (and later the Duke of Wellington) and France's Talleyrand who lived through the Revolution and had been one of Napoleon's ministers. Lots of 'interesting' ladies as well!
