Why did Elizabeth I choose Protestantism instead of Catholicism?
Henry VIII was a catholic without a Pope! He didn't find the Anglican church, that was Edward VI's and Elizabeth I's work. Elizabeth chose Protestantism because she was raised that way, She was taught by tutors who believed her father's reforms had not gone far enough. Her mother was a protestant as well, and she wanted to maintain the Protestant church to make sure her claim to the throne was legitimate, as under Catholicism her mother and father's marriage was illegal so she was illegitimate. Unlike Mary, who was raised a devout Catholic and could only be legitimate in the eyes of Catholics. It's a complicated situation, but everyone mistakenly believes Henry established the Anglican Church but he didn't he simply denounced the Pope, this was the only change he made to the church in England after Cromwell.
